The Piltdown Man is one of the most infamous hoaxes in the history of science. In 1912, Charles Dawson, an amateur archaeologist, claimed to have discovered a new species of human in a gravel pit in Piltdown, England. The fossil fragments he found appeared to be a combination of human and ape-like features, leading scientists to believe they had found the "missing link" between humans and apes.
